Canon T5i and T3i aren’t exactly comparable because they cater to different needs. There is a huge price difference and obviously a substantial difference in features or specs and functions of the DSLRs. Since most people are likely to be perplexed about the exact category of DSLR that would be ideal for their use, we end up assessing the difference between Canon T3i and T5i. It is obvious that a model priced significantly higher than another will have certain superior features but the T3i can stand on its own as well.
Difference Between Canon T3 and T3i
Canon T5i has certain advantages over T3i. Canon T5i has video autofocus which allows your videos to be sharper and crisper due to the automated focus. Canon T3i doesn’t have this feature. Canon T5i has startup delay of just 700 ms as compared to 1500 ms of Canon T3i. Canon T5i has a touch screen interface and in camera HDR, neither of which is found in Canon T3i. T5i has 9 cross type focus points while the T3i has one.
Canon T5i shoots at 5 fps while T3i shoots at 3.7 fps. T5i has shorter shutter lag at 264 ms and T3i takes 283 ms which may not sound much of a difference but is substantial. T5i has an ISO range of up to 12,800 while the T3i has up to 6,400 ISO. The ISO boost to further aid light sensitivity in T5i is 25,600 ISO against T3i’s 12,800 ISO.
Both Canon T5i and T3i are similar in dimensions. Their thickness is almost the same at 7.9 cm and 8 cm respectively. T5i is considerably more expensive. Given the retail prices, you can expect to pay as much as 40% more for T5i compared to T3i.
T3i has certain advantages when compared to T5i and that is other than the price. The Color depth of T3i is a tad better at 22.1 bits against 21.7 bits of T5i. Lower light performance of the T3i is slightly better given the fact that it has 793 ISO compared to 681 ISO of the T5i. There would be less noise in Canon T3i in low light conditions.
The quality of an image is slightly better, almost 10% better, in the T3i. On aggregate scores, T3i grabs 65.0 against T5i’s 61.0. The dynamic range is also more in T3i with 11.5 EV against T5i’s 11.2 EV.
