Difference Between Optima Batteries

Optima batteries are excellent for starting and powering motors of all kinds. They tend to last longer than other batteries and give you more power in a smaller box. This is due to the Sprialcell technology that is used in all of their batteries. But your Optima battery isn’t going to do anything for you unless you buy the right one. Optima batteries come in three main styles, denoted by the color of the top plate and known as Redtop, Yellowtop Bluetop batteries.

Types of Batteries

Redtop batteries are for use in most ordinary commuter vehicles. It has to be connected to an alternator in order to provide extra energy if it is needed. In addition to your standard automobiles, Redtop batteries can also be used in RVs, heavy equipment where its primary function is startup, and diesel vehicles with no aftermarket electronics.

Yellowtop batteries are designed for vehicles that have no alternators or higher than usual energy needs. Aftermarket additions are the most common reason Yellowtop batteries are needed. These additions include stereos, GPS, additional chargers, snowplows, and winches. Certain vehicles may require Yellowtop batteries even in factory condition, for example, minivans with electronically powered sliding doors. DVD players are another reason to use Yellowtop, especially if you will be watching DVDs while the motor is off.

Racing vehicles also use Yellowtop batteries. This is because they do not have generators or alternators, so all of the electricity used by the vehicle has to come from the battery. Vehicles modified for drag racing need Yellowtop as well. If you are driving a hybrid vehicle or an electric car, once again you will need a Yellowtop battery.

The final type of Optima battery is Bluetop. The Bluetop battery was originally designed for marine applications, which explains the color choice. It was made in two different styles, a starting battery which has a dark gray case and a dual purpose battery which has a light gray case.

Chosing the Right Battery

The starting battery should only be used when no deep cycling is needed. For marine use, this would be ideal for any boat in which the battery’s only job is to get the motor running. It can also be used in RVs under the same conditions.

If your boat has heavy electrical accessories or a trolling motor, then you need the light gray Bluetop battery which has extremely high cranking power. Again, the battery can be put in RVs if a simple starting battery is not going to provide sufficient power.

Optima batteries are very powerful and can last a long time, provided you match the right battery to the right vehicle. Make sure you understand your vehicle’s energy needs before purchasing a battery and you are sure to get the right one.
